IUIP

IUI Process

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a well-known fertility procedure that involves preparing sperm and placing it directly into the uterus during ovulation. It is designed to be simple, quick, and minimally invasive, and is often considered before more advanced treatments like IVF.

At Lifespan Birth, we do not recommend IUI. Instead, we recommend ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), which is a more advanced process that achieves higher precision and success rates. For patients researching IUI, it’s important to understand how it works and why many choose ICSI as the preferred option.

Step-by-Step IUI Process

The typical IUI process includes three main steps and aftercare:

1Ovulation Induction
  • Before IUI, the woman may receive ovulation-inducing medication, such as oral or injectable fertility drugs, to stimulate the development and release of one or more eggs.
2Semen Preparation
  • On the day of the procedure, the male partner provides a semen sample, which is processed in the lab to concentrate healthy sperm and remove seminal fluid and debris.
3Insemination
  • The concentrated sperm sample is then carefully inserted directly into the woman’s uterus using a thin catheter. This bypasses the cervix, placing the sperm closer to the fallopian tubes where fertilization can occur.
Showing four steps of the IUI process: ovulation induction, sperm preparation, insemination with catheter, and post-procedure care

Preparing for IUI

Prior to the IUI procedure, a full evaluation—including hormonal assessments and ultrasound monitoring—is undertaken to adapt the treatment strategy to your requirements. We advocate a healthy lifestyle, adherence to prescribed medicines, and stress management to enhance your body’s preparation. Post-insemination, gentle exercise, continuing medication, and periodic follow-up sessions ensure your progress is properly monitored.

After the Procedure

Following IUI, most patients can continue with their daily routines. Below are the typical considerations:

  • Gentle exercise such as walking or soft yoga
  • Continued use of prescribed medications
  • Follow-up appointments to track progress

The pregnancy test is usually scheduled about two weeks after insemination, often called the “two-week wait.”

Risks and Considerations

IUI is a minimally invasive procedure with a low-risk profile. Some patients may experience mild cramping or spotting after the treatment. In rare cases, when fertility drugs are used, there may be a risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Our team is committed to minimizing these risks and providing attentive care throughout your journey.

Taking the Next Step

If you are researching the IUI process, it’s important to know that our clinic offers ICSI instead. While IUI can be a starting point, it usually has a lower success rate and cannot provide advanced options like embryo genetic testing (NGS). By contrast, ICSI is more precise, more advanced, and gives patients a higher chance of success, especially for couples facing fertility challenges.

“Your well-being is our priority every step of the way. We know this journey can feel overwhelming, but our team is here to support you with compassion and expertise. Remember, you’re not alone—together, we’ll navigate each stage to bring you closer to your dream.”

FAQs About the IUI Process

Is IUI painful?

Most patients describe IUI as painless, though some may feel mild cramping.

How long does the IUI procedure take?

IUI itself takes just a few minutes. An ICSI cycle takes longer overall, but provides more precise results by ensuring fertilization in the lab.

What happens after insemination?

After IUI, patients resume normal activities the same day. After ICSI embryo transfer, most patients also return to daily life immediately.

How soon will I know if it worked?

A pregnancy test is scheduled about 10 to 14 days after insemination.
