What is PGT-A?
Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy (PGT-A) is a screening method used during IVF and ICSI to examine the chromosome number of embryos.
By selecting embryos with a normal chromosome count, PGT-A can support higher pregnancy success and reduce the risk of miscarriage.
Why PGT-A Is Used
Chromosomal Screening
Identifies embryos with missing or extra chromosomes.
Reducing the Chance of Miscarriage
Aneuploid embryos are a leading cause of pregnancy loss.
Supporting Single-Embryo Transfer
Improves confidence in selecting one strong embryo, helping avoid multiple pregnancies.
When PGT-A May Be Recommended
Advanced maternal age
Recurrent pregnancy loss or implantation failure
Severe male-factor infertility requiring ICSI
Couples seeking additional reassurance before transfer
What PGT-A Does Not Do
- It is not designed to detect every genetic condition.
- It cannot guarantee pregnancy, though it can support improved outcomes.
- It is not necessary for every patient; suitability depends on medical history and a doctor’s guidance.

FAQs About PGT-A
Yes. Only a small number of cells from the trophectoderm are sampled, and this approach is considered safe under ASRM and ESHRE guidelines.
No. PGT-A is performed on embryos, not eggs, so egg quality is unchanged.
Typically 5–10 trophectoderm cells from the outer layer of the embryo.
When performed by trained embryologists, the biopsy procedure is safe and does not remove cells from the part of the embryo that will become the fetus.
